Job Description

The Commercial Lines Senior Consulting Underwriter is the commercial lines underwriting expert and holds the highest level of delegated underwriting authority. The role utilizes deep technical underwriting knowledge to approve pricing decisions as per corporate underwriting rules and guidelines, reviews and analyzes large accounts and ensures commercial lines achieves target premium growth goals. The role also drives accountability and continuous improvement of commercial lines and conducts underwriting audits on large and complex accounts.


  • Serves as the Underwriting expert for Commercial Lines to approve underwriting and pricing decisions in alignment with corporate underwriting rules and guidelines.
  • Acts as the profit guardian for Commercial Lines by utilizing the highest level of delegated Underwriting authority to review and approve division underwriting referrals that the Authority Grants dictate.
  • Achieves target Commercial Lines growth goals by identifying areas of opportunity for growth, providing guidance on pricing to attract quality while working with leadership, actuary, reinsurance to ensure adequate protection of surplus.
  • Participates in driving, establishing, maintaining, and continuously improving Commercial Lines underwriting policy.
  • Delivers insights derived out of data and analysis and collective file review results to management.
  • Serves as the resource and subject matter expert for large commercial accounts, leverages understanding and expertise of exposures, relationship to premium as well as expertise with various rating plans, reinsurance, and pricing needs by class to effectively evaluate pricing adequacy of large complex accounts.
  • Provides leadership with feedback on product, pricing and rate/rule activities of the competition, reviews high value inspections for assigned agencies and inputs into product design.
  • Actively develops and maintains relationships with Reinsurers and secures reinsurance in facultative markets as needed.
  • Serves as a resource for Underwriting, Risk Control consultations for commercial and risk control personnel on individual accounts.
  • Drives accountability and continuous improvement by performing individual commercial lines underwriting audits on all sizes of accounts including large, complex accounts.
  • Participates in claims reviews on large complex losses and/or complex accounts and provides expertise in various ad-hoc projects as assigned.
  • Leads audits, provides input into audit questionnaires in alignment with underwriting guidelines, develops narrative reports with findings and recommendations and enhances the quality assurance process.
  • Creates and facilitates Commercial Lines underwriting training and development opportunities for Westfield University and Business units as needed.
  • Coaches experienced underwriters on complex accounts and mentors recently trained underwriters.

  • 10+ years of multi-line Commercial Underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or commensurate work experience.
