Henry Ford Cancer has the expertise and structural capabilities to deliver care that can help cancer patients derive maximal benefits from advances in Oncology that have improved the outcomes of many cancer patients. In addition, Henry Ford Cancer is focused on programmatic development to engage in high quality patient care, research, education, and community outreach. It is in this context that we seek a Nursing Administrator for Henry Ford Cancer to direct Nursing Care across the Cancer Service Line. The Nursing Administrator serves in a senior leadership position and is part of the Clinical Executive Cabinet responsible for setting the strategy and structure of the Cancer Service Line and for achievement of its long-term success.

The Henry Ford Cancer Service Line is a Commission on Cancer-accredited Integrated Network Cancer Program (INCP) providing cancer services at five individually accredited hospitals and seven associated ambulatory care sites across Henry Ford Health. All sites are also nationally accredited for Breast Cancer care and most recently achieved accreditation for Rectal Cancer care. Comprehensive services are delivered by medical, radiation and surgical oncology professionals with subspecialty expertise and a full complement of supportive care programs and staff. Henry Ford Cancer integrates multi-disciplinary, disease-focused care across its sites, with HFH Detroit as the quaternary site, and serves a catchment area in Michigan with racial, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity.

With the recent affiliation between Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University, Henry Ford Cancer is developing translational and clinical research strength and will build a state-of-the-art clinical and research campus in Detroit as they prepare to apply for NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. Significant investments have been made to expand and renovate facilities across multiple geographies. With a large volume of cancer cases and a well-regarded reputation, robust institutional and philanthropic resources, and commitment to the highest quality of care, Henry Ford Cancer is positioned to increase its impact in the communities it serves.

The Nursing Administrator's core areas of responsibility will include integration of Nursing Care across the Cancer Service Line with a focus on patient care and workflow, Professional Development of Nurses including Nursing Education, Quality Improvement, Cancer Research and Strategic Planning. The Nursing Administrator in consultation with the Executive Cabinet will have direct input on making decisions regarding Nursing Care across the Cancer Service Line:

Functional Areas of Responsibility:

  • Nursing Practice Leadership

o Unite HFH Cancer Nurse Leadership Team across the organization. Nursing Leaders within the Cancer Service Line will be accountable to the Nursing Administrator in a matrix relationship for nursing practice, development, research, quality improvement, clinical competency, and care experience. The Nursing Administrator will collaborate with Inpatient Nursing at all of the Henry Ford Hospitals to ensure seamless transition from inpatient to outpatient care and vice-versa.

o Represent Cancer Service Line nursing within HFH Ambulatory and the HFH Enterprise.

  • Nursing Development

o Develop Nursing Education program. Such a program will be executed in collaboration with System Nursing Education to revolutionize the education and career of oncology nurses and inspire the next generation of top talent to join the mission:

* Onboarding

* Competencies, Ongoing Education/CEUs, and Certifications that at a minimum meet the requirements of the Commission on Cancer Integrated Network Cancer Program Standards

* Pipeline programs (ex: RYSE MED)

o Reimagine nursing team personal growth by tailoring opportunities and programs to align with individual goals while supporting the organization's objectives.

o Unlock transformation potential by training and empowering experienced, upcoming, and new leaders from across the nursing organization and develop career pathways for Nurse Leaders and Researchers.

  • Nursing Research

o Integrate with framework for certification and designation of a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center.

o Support original research opportunities for oncology nurses.

o Direct career pathways and development of Nurse Researchers to develop independent research projects and to collaborate with researchers across the Cancer Service Line.

o Collaborate with Cancer Clinical and Translational Research Office (CCTRO) to ensure high quality Clinical Research through proper conduct of clinical trials. The Nursing Administrator will collaborate with CCTRO to ensure integration of clinical care and clinical research practices at all sites within the Cancer Service Line.

  • Quality, Value, and Safety

o Participate in the Quality Value and Safety Council responsible for governing progress and providing direction for all quality, value, and safety strategic priorities for the Cancer Service Line. Partner with Medical Director and Administrative Director, Cancer Quality, to lead quality improvement initiatives, safety reporting, and regulatory standards:

o Investigate safety incidents initiated through RL cases related to patients, visitors, and employees, using a proactive approach to event reporting, and monitoring to identify themes that lead to sustainable quality improvement.

  • Care Innovation & Clinical Operations Excellence

o Co-Lead the Operations Council responsible for governing progress and providing direction for all operational strategic priorities for the Cancer Service Line. Co-lead with Physician and Administrative partners.

o Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based practices, clinical guidelines, and industry trends in oncology care and research.

o Implement Oncology Nursing Society clinical practice guidelines promoting evidence-based recommendations for patient care.

o Participate in optimizing care models with payment models and charge capture.

  • Strategic Development of the Cancer Service Line

o An important task of the Executive Cabinet is to engage in strategic development of the Cancer Service Line. The Nursing Administrator as a key member of the Executive Cabinet who will be involved in strategic planning for the Cancer Service Line.

Reporting Structure:

  • Nursing Administrator will report directly to the Medical Director, Cancer Service Line with an indirect/dotted relationship to the System Vice President, Cancer Service Line . The Nursing Administrator will also have a matrix relationship to Henry Ford Health Ambulatory Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Nursing Administrator participates in HFH Ambulatory and HFH Enterprise Nursing Governance and other HFH enterprise committees to drive alignment and progress.

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Education:
    • Master's degree in nursing or healthcare field preferred.
    • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
    • Nationally Accredited Certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred.

  • Experience:
    • Seven (7) years of relevant and progressive leadership experience with specific emphasis in leading in oncology nursing and operations.
    • Demonstrated experience in a complex leadership role.

  • Skills/Knowledge:
    • High levels of emotional intelligence that enable effective connection, collaboration, and communication with all stakeholders from front line staff, physicians, executive leadership, and external collaborators.
    • Advanced knowledge, understanding of current practice and future industry trends, and demonstrated experience in multiple areas of oncology care.
    • Expert analytical, facilitative, and process improvement knowledge with understanding of group dynamics, specifically change management, and problem-solving methodologies.
    • Skilled at managing large, complex assignments simultaneously with potentially conflicting priorities and deadlines.
    • Expert leadership development/mentoring skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to teach complex technical/analytical concepts to all staff. Able to represent HFH at National conferences, meetings, and events.
