HDR is seeking self-start candidates for a Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Project Engineer and Assistant Project Manager to work as a member of our Water Business Group in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This position will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of Water/Wastewater Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Projects in Michigan, which includes projects such as water and wastewater pipelines and pump stations, asset management, condition assessment and rehabilitation. The preferred candidate will have a strong technical background in condition assessment and implementing pressure pipe management solutions for water and wastewater systems.

This position requires an understanding of pressure pipe materials and their degradation, various methods, and technologies to perform condition assessment of large diameter pressurized water and wastewater pipelines and the limitations of such techniques, and utility operational requirements to deploy innovative condition assessment technologies. In addition, the ability to interact with multiple business groups (e.g. transportation, water/wastewater, permitting, and power and energy groups) across both local and regional HDR offices, strong writing and oral skills, field experience such as technology piloting, construction management, and data/sample collection, and a track record of completing work on time and within budget.

Primary Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the position include supporting water/wastewater conveyance and/or treatment related projects for federal, state and local municipalities and industrial clients. This position will require production of design calculations, technical reports, and preparation of construction documents. In the role of Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation Project Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Work directly on projects from large linear programs to small condition assessment projects to provide state-of-the-art condition assessment and pipeline management solutions for a variety of water and wastewater clients.
  • Implement HDR's best practices for condition assessment.
  • Review proposed scopes of work and support proposal development to provide clients technically sound pipe solutions.
  • Participate directly on condition assessment and rehabilitation projects.
  • Lead the design of pipeline rehabilitation projects that may be needed following condition assessment projects.
  • Project coordination with client representatives.
  • Demonstrate strong writing and oral skills: the majority of evaluations that HDR performs require a final report and client presentation.
  • Serve as an owner's representative, coordination of inspection/observation activities, review and response to shop drawings, submittals, requests for clarification and other construction related correspondence.
  • Help to coordinate the work of engineers and the balance of the multi-discipline project team throughout the entire project development.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years related experience
  • PE license
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required (Access experience would be plus)

Preferred Qualifications

  • In depth knowledge of state-of-the-art practices to proactively manage large diameter pressurized water and wastewater pipelines.
  • Understanding of various methods and technologies to perform condition assessment of large diameter pressurized water and wastewater pipelines. An understanding of the limitations of such techniques is desired.
  • Ability to evaluate condition assessment findings and make recommendations on measures to improve pipeline reliability of large diameter pressurized water and wastewater pipelines.
  • Ability to develop and train project engineers on pressure pipe management.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and with a project team to completion of a task. Excellent team player with ability to function effectively in a variety of roles on integrated project teams.
  • Preference given to local candidates.
  • Experience designing and creating plans and specifications for water and wastewater conveyance rehabilitation projects is preferred.
