POSITION SUMMARY

The Engineering Technician will provide hands on fabricating, assembling, testing, evaluating, and documenting related to light duty pick-up truck and Jeep accessory products in a research and development environment. The responsibilities within this role will involve a broad range of products including Bed Covers (a.k.a. Tonneau Covers), Styling Bars, Chase/Headache Racks, Step Bars, Latches and Mechanisms, and chassis components. This position will require a highly adaptable, hands-on technician who is a skilled fabricator in machining, welding, and assembly. This position will utilize skills to set-up and operate test equipment for basic function tests including load, deflection, cyclic durability, and test buck construction. In the case of testing, this position will be required to capture and document key test data. Additionally, the Engineering Technician will be required to follow the best safety practices while performing all job duties.

CORE FUNCTIONS

Fabrication: Follow direction provided by Engineering and utilize machine shop equipment (including but not limited to Drill Press, Band Saw, Panel Saw, Blast Cabinet, Press, Press Brake, Lathe, Tube Bender, CNC Mill, CNC Plasma Cutter, MIG Welder, TIG Welder, Fabrication Table, 3D Printers, etc.) to make precision-fabricated components and assemblies that meet required dimensional specifications per CAD design.

    • Work in accordance with test procedure standards and regulatory guidelines.
    • Maintain an organized and clean shop area and assist in ship housekeeping, as required.
    • Communicate directly with engineering supervisors regarding the status of fabrication and test schedules.
    • Read fine scales, dials, and indicators of measurement devices.
    • Safely operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, band saws, plasma cutters, and grinders.
    • Recommend equipment changes and additions to increase safety and productivity.
    • Perform basic care and maintenance of all shop and test equipment.
    • Track cutting tool life and replace dull tools.

Testing/Design Validation: Perform product analysis and design validation (DV) test activities for existing and new products for commercial viability, durability, and functionality.

    • Analyze and evaluate data and/or systems to determine if validation criteria were met or exceeded.
    • Identify mechanical problems/root cause analysis of component and system level testing.
    • Employ measurement devices for length, force, torque, thermal, impact, humidity, and mass.
    • Compile, categorize, tabulate, or verify information or data to provide detailed report summaries.
    • Document test procedures and results in drafted detailed reports.
    • Detect changes in circumstances, events, or alarms, and assess problems.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree in a field related to engineering technology or a professional certification from an accredited organization is required.
  • 2 years of fabrication experience or equivalent fabricator military experience including 2 years TIG and MIG welding experience or AWS certification is required.
  • 2 years machining experience (manual lathe, Bridgeport, shear, press brake, etc.) is required.
  • CNC experience utilizing 3D CAD/CAM software is required.
  • SolidWorks and AutoCAD experience are preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to perform cutting & welding. Oxy acetylene cutting a plus.
  • Ability to execute show-quality MIG and TIG welds when required.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to interact with a cross-functional diverse team throughout the organization and treat everyone with respect. Team mind-set yet hold self personally accountable for team results.
  • Excellent verbal, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to convey and understand comments and questions of others.

  • Ability to be detailed oriented and pay close attention to all areas of projects and tasks.

Travel

  • Must be able to travel locally (Metro-Detroit) and domestically on occasion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is subject to medium work; Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical Activities

  • This position is subject to the following physical activities: standing, balancing, walking, reaching, hearing, and using hands and/or fingers in repetitive motions.

Visual Acuity

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Working Conditions

  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including heat, noise, vibration, and hazards from the production-based environment.
