Job Description

ENERAL SUMMARY:
Henry Ford Health is growing its fundraising team and is looking to fill a leadership position with an experienced major gift fundraiser and leader. This position will enjoy the excitement of playing a significant role in a comprehensive fundraising campaign. This campaign will support a variety of new projects including the $250 million research building being constructed in partnership with Michigan State University and the $1.8
billion flagship academic medical center in Detroit. This position will be the lead fundraiser for a major service line or hospital and will also
provide leadership to other major gift officer(s). This assignment will provide substantial opportunity for fundraising success and career growth. A competitive compensation package will be commensurate with experience. The Lead Development Officer will be responsible for securing major gifts ($50,000 commitments and above) for Henry Ford Health. The Lead Development Officer works closely with Development Office staff, Department/Program leadership, physician leadership, volunteers, and donor advisors to identify prospects and develop solicitation
strategies for major gift prospects.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops and implements fundraising plans for their assigned area(s) within Henry Ford Health.
2. Fundraising plans are focused on moving donors towards making a major gift commitment of $50,000 and above through prospect discovery, engagement, cultivation, proposal creation, solicitation, and stewardship.

3. Experience securing six figure and seven-figure gifts is required.
4. Activities are planned and accomplished through collaborative teamwork with the centralized Development Office as the positions are a key driver of the overall annual philanthropic goal of $50+ million.
5. Solicits donations primarily from individuals and family foundations but may at times also work with grant making foundations and corporations.
6. Works with leadership of assigned area(s) to identify, vet and approve strategic giving opportunities that are aligned with priorities and that typically include capital, endowment, research, and programmatic needs.
7. Maintains and enhances professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.
8. Responsible for leading a team comprised of one or more Senior Development Officers or Development Officers, providing guidance and mentorship while empowering team members to reach their personal and professional goals.
9. Performs other responsibilities or assignments as required.

Identification/Cultivation:
Works closely with medical leadership to identify grateful patients as potential major gift donors whose interests coincide with Henry Ford Health. Works closely with leadership to leverage existing community relationships with individuals, volunteers, corporations, and other community partners. Works with Development Office research team to identify relationship to HFH, interests including those outside of HFH, giving history, gift ranges, giving potential and similar information of current and prospective donors, using a wide variety of print and electronic reference sources. Creates strategies for and manages relationships with current and prospective major gift donors; facilitates meetings between current and prospective donors with HFH physicians and leadership; plans strategy for prospect cultivation and donor recognition events.

Product/Case Development:
Working closely with medical leadership to identify and develop case statements representing product lines that match Henry Ford Health priorities; works with Development Communications on content for written case statements that match priorities with donor interests.

External Relationships:
Spends approximately 70% of time interacting with donors, volunteers, community leaders, hospital leaders and prospective donors. Manages a portfolio of approximately 80-120 prospects.

Education/Stewardship:
Engages appropriate major gift donors and prospects in the programs at Henry Ford Health: Provides on-going information on relevant programs and overall strategies that may be a funding fit; provides continued information on use and impact of gifts; engages donors and prospects in HFH activities and ensures proper recognition of all major gifts; plans targeted outreach activities aimed at increasing the donor pool and cultivating/stewarding existing prospects; creates programs to educate donors on giving to health care and how philanthropy helps HFH achieve its goals; cultivates and
educates prospects and donors through personal visits and written and oral communications.

Proposal Writing/Strategy:
The Lead Development Officer develops a proposal strategy for major gift solicitations which clearly articulates the need for a contribution and links this need and gift impact to the prospective donors' giving interests. Assists in prioritizing proposals and may research, write, and edit correspondence to
current and prospective donors including introduction letters, gift acknowledgments and reports on the use of grant funds.

Effect and Results:
The effect of this position will be to significantly enhance and contribute to the overall fundraising efforts of the Development Office to achieve Henry Ford Health's priorities. The Lead Development Officer will be responsible for representing their assigned area(s) and will directly steward the associated fundraising priorities to increase philanthropic support. In cases where collaboration with HFH partners, physicians, chairs, other Development Office team members or HFH volunteers is needed to secure major gifts, the Lead Development Officer will enlist such help.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree from four-year College.
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in major gift fundraising, planned gift fundraising or related sales experience required.
Experience securing six-figure and seven-figure gifts required.

Leadership or direct management experience within a development or sales organization preferred.
