Museum Educators are responsible for the development and/or delivery of new and existing programming at the Institute of Science focused largely on experiences for outreach to Flint, Pontiac, Detroit, and other Southeast Michigan classrooms. Museum Educators are expected to demonstrate excellent presentation, interpersonal, classroom management, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with a broad range of science topics is required. Museum Educators play an integral role in creating exceptional experiences and are expected to demonstrate excellent customer service, audience engagement, and problem-solving skills.

Schedules vary based on program calendar and may include weekend days during the school year, holiday and/or evening assignment, and hours could begin as early as 5:00 am or run as late as 11:00 pm.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and deliver educational programs for children and adults offered through the Institute's outreach programming.
  • Effectively present information and work with diverse audiences in an articulate, thoughtful, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Adapt programs in response to age, ability, and feedback of participants as well as equipment malfunction, performance reviews, and/or program evaluation.
  • Become familiar with current offerings (both at the Institute and in Southeast Michigan); seek opportunities for improvement and implementation.
  • Drive and travel in an Institute vehicle to Southeast Michigan classrooms on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Deliver programs at the museum which include occasional evening, holiday, and weekend hours.
  • Accept responsibility for and assist in maintenance of program materials.
  • Document to-do lists, procedures, and lesson plans; leave a clear trail that the Visitor Experience team can access and follow.
  • Be aware of emergency and security procedures; implement as needed (training provided).
  • Maintain attendance, punctuality, and performance standards set forth in Cranbrook's employee handbook.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or higher in an area of science/education required.
  • One years' experience teaching youth (especially elementary/middle school) in formal and/or informal setting required. Certification in elementary or middle school education is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work with diverse audiences in a pleasant, tactful, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to adapt program materials, presentation style, and/or delivery as needed to provide age-appropriate instruction.
  • Ability to envision and develop new programmatic opportunities for formal and informal learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated experience with and understanding of a variety of content delivery methods.
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, active listening, and public speaking skills.
  • Use organizational skills to keep track of materials, schedules, and associated communications from Outreach Supervisor and Visitor Experience Manager.
  • Enthusiasm for subject matter and eagerness to share that enthusiasm with learners of all ages.
  • Mature and professional attitude; must be reliable.
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver's license with satisfactory driving record.

This is a part-time position, working up to 19 hours per week.
