Job Description

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is currently seeking a Navigation Engineer at our Superior Township, MI facility, who will:

  • Design and develop Navigation Systems for Hyundai-Kia vehicles tailored for the North American market. Benchmark similar systems on competitor vehicles. Investigate new trends and technology. Make recommendations for electric equipment for Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Write specifications and test plans for current equipment.
  • Develop and/or refine design specifications for North American Navigation Systems including route planning/guidance, dead reckoning, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Text-to-Speech (TTS), Human Machine Interface (HMI) Voice Recognition and map database requirements.
  • Evaluate and validate North American Navigation Systems on the test bench, create test routes and exercise performance tests developed from requirements developed by HMC, HATCI Engineering and Suppliers. Define, develop and drive test plans to assure field testing is accomplished.
  • Manage progress of specific hardware and software component development with HMC, Korean and North American suppliers using MS Project. Maintain and drive closure of open issues that are uncovered during design, development, validation, launch and warranty/field reports.
  • Contribute to a cross functional team consisting of advanced electrical engineers, system engineer, and HMC engineer to assure that current vehicle architectures support navigation and determine how future technologies will synergize with the navigation application.
  • Contribute to evaluation/development of off-board (server-based) navigation and telematics products for future vehicle applications.
  • Specify, purchase and/or develop specialized engineering and test equipment for design, development and evaluation of Navigation system performance.
  • Perform appropriate benchmarking activities of both on-board and off-board navigation products.
  • Submit feature and cost reduction ideas to make systems more affordable, profitable and desirable.
  • Evaluate and drive resolution of field/customer concerns once systems launch.
  • Support HMC requests in regard to North American quality, trends, new technology, new concepts and testing.
  • Review suppliers' current technology and latest trends and report findings. Develop close working relationship with current suppliers and investigate new suppliers.
  • Attend focus groups and auto shows to talk with consumers regarding what they are looking for in regard to performance of Navigation systems.
  • Create specifications, test plans, reports, and engineering documentation to support the development of the Electrical Systems and input data into HMC information systems (BOM, EO's, and ED Plan.)
  • Create and present technical reports for management review in regard to progress of projects, technical advancements, new trends, and benchmark studies.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring of department budget.
  • Perform additional projects as assigned.
  • Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally.
  • Provide expert advice without formal supervisory responsibility.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Automotive Industry engineering and manufacturing of Electrical Systems
  • Expert knowledge of Electrical Engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Valid drivers license
  • 2-3 years of experience with design and development of Automotive Infotainment Systems and Components
